Artist’s Statement

Born in Toronto, Ontario, this entirely self taught Canadian artist enjoys combining her life long passion for horses and animals with her art.  She has more than 30 years experience in the equine field including hunter/jumper, dressage, riding instruction, breeding and harness racing.  This “hands-on” approach is evident in her art where every muscle, whisker and buckle is portrayed in realistic detail.  Barns, old building, peeling paint and rust are also fascinating subjects for her work.

Vickie’s favourite medium is the pencil on hot pressed, acid free watercolour paper, Canson or Stonehenge paper for a coloured support.  Vickie began her career with her black and white renderings and has since expanded her mediums to include coloured pencil and acrylic on paper.

Vickie works largely from photographs and the camera is clicking away from early spring until the snow flies, collecting reference material in the form of equine, animals and potential backgrounds for those many drawings and paintings to come.  The majority of her work is commissioned and she enjoys drawing a wide variety of subjects and disciplines.
